Masenza’s Story: Every Child Deserves a Chance
At Project Zawadi, our mission is centered on education in Tanzania. Thanks to the generosity of our donors, our Rapid Response Initiative lets us act when a child needs help—even when that moment falls outside an original plan. Masenza’s story is one of those moments.
Without support, many of the moments that change lives would never happen.
Before: A Child People Overlooked
Wherever our team went—school openings, cultural tours, community projects—Masenza appeared.
He was often living on the streets. He had no stable place to stay. Sometimes he slept outside or in unfinished buildings. He begged for food. He didn’t have access to regular bathing and he lives with a developmental disability. People often fed him, but in general they dismissed him and moved on.
We saw something more.
With care and research, our team identified a school in Musoma designed to support students with special needs. Project Zawadi committed to support his education and basic needs.
“I believe with all my heart that every child deserves an opportunity to get an education,” says Executive Director Brian Singer. “Giving Masenza a chance was the right thing to do.”
Now: A Life Changed
Teachers describe him as smart and liked by his peers. When visitors come, he enjoys representing his classmates. He is healthy, well cared for, and gaining confidence.
- Daily attendance and confident participation in class
- Giving speeches to peers and visitors
- Growing computer skills
- Self-care routines: bathing, washing clothes, brushing teeth
“You see someone in need… you offer.” Adam—one of the first students supported by Project Zawadi and now a leader—reflects on Masenza’s journey:
“It’s a lesson. When you see someone in need and you have something to offer, you offer. Helping these children helps families, communities, and the country… These kids are the ones coming up to build the country.”
Why Rapid Response Matters
Our Rapid Response Initiative exists for moments like this—so a child doesn’t have to wait for the next budget cycle or grant proposal.
Masenza’s life transformed because people chose to act—donors made his education and care possible. When the need is clear, your help can go a long way.
